SCEGGS DARLINGHURST

How green was the Festival on Forbes? The numbers are in and the community has achieved an outstanding result!

This year the Festival committee made a conscious effort to reduce what was being brought into the School. It is estimated that the 2017 Festival on Forbes produced 20,000 litres of unsorted waste. You may have noticed there were no balloons and no excess plastic or packaging this year. As a result, the amount of waste removed after the fair was only 12,020 litres. 28% of the waste was cardboard and paper, 3% was organic food waste, 4% was green waste and 52% was mixed recycling. Only 13%, or 1580L, of the waste from the Festival on Forbes went to landfill. This is an amazing result! However, it could not have been achieved without the fantastic student waste warriors who worked tirelessly at the bins helping people to correctly dispose of their waste and the maintenance team.

Festival goers were clearly thirsty! The Sydney water refill stations were constantly used throughout the day consuming 217 litres of water. Combined with the availability of the reusable water bottles, this meant we saved 362 600ml bottles from being purchased. This would amount to 5Kg of plastic going into landfill and a saving of 543 litres of water which would otherwise have been used in manufacturing the bottles.

Finally, single use takeaway coffee cups and lids were reduced to just a single bag, thanks to the "Borrow a mug" campaign. Of course, we also thank everyone who contributed to this result by bringing their own keep cup!

Overall the campaign to make Festival on Forbes a more environmentally friendly event was a huge success. These excellent results could not have been achieved without the support of the school community. The planet thanks you for your efforts.

What a truly wonderful day on Sunday for the 2019 Fabulous Green Festival on Forbes. The P&F would like to thank the entire School community for a relaxed and happy day, filled with fun, laughter and SCEGGS spirit. The weather of course was perfect and capped off a truly fantastic day. Special thanks to the Festival on Forbes Committee, all 26 of them, for the enormous amount of work they put in to making sure that Sunday ran so smoothly. The green theme was particularly popular and we have had a lot of feedback thanking “The Green Machine” who put the Enviro Hub together. We were not sure how the Coffee Mug Exchange would go, but it was a huge success and the mugs have been put aside for future Festivals. Thank you to everyone for embracing those efforts. Keith (Facilities Manager) and his team carefully monitored the amount of rubbish that we created and in due course we will have some statistics about how much landfill we avoided! Speaking of the Maintenance Team, the Festival would not have been possible without their hours of work to make sure the School was ready. A thousand "thank yous" to each and everyone of Keith’s team.

Our very special Class Parents also deserve the heartiest of congratulations for their fantastic stalls that have taken so much of their time this year. How beautiful it all looked. Thank you so much, the Festival is nothing without your efforts. And of course it is the tireless support of the School, the General Office and Nelson House staff that underpins all preparations for our Festival.

Lastly, and on a personal note, I would sincerely like to thank Emma Holmes , Co-convenor of this year’s Festival on Forbes for her outstanding contribution over the last 12 months to make Sunday everything it was. Always with a smile on her face and a spreadsheet at the ready, Emma was the Co-Convenor that all fairs need. Deepest appreciation.

I am also pleased to report that our preliminary financial accounts show that the Festival generated almost $100,000. A terrific outcome which will go towards the redevelopment of Wilkinson House and the school's scholarship prorgam.

Warmest regards and sincere gratitude to all the SCEGGS’ Community.

We hope everyone is ready for the Green Festival on Forbes this Sunday from 10am. Remember to bring your own reusable water bottles for our Sydney Water refill stations and reusable cups or mugs for hot drinks!

SCEGGS reusable cups will be available to purchase on Sunday, or you can borrow a mug from our Mug Swap at the cafes. Your enthusiasm on the day to assist our green-vested "Waste Warriors” is appreciated and will help reduce waste to landfill.

There are so many amazing stalls at the Festival on Forbes this year as well as regular favourites like Sports Zone and Dunk the Teacher, jumping castles, an animal farm, craft activities and face painting. The Book Stall and the Vintage Clothing Stalls are not only popular but truly sustainable, and market stalls will be selling gift wrapping and cards, hand-made ceramics, fashion, homewares and gifts.

Don’t forget to bake a cake for the Cake Stall and deliver it on Saturday or early Sunday morning. If anyone needs an extra cake box, please contact the General Office. There will be loads of delicious food stalls too, with Aussie and Greek BBQs, Spanish Paella and the Forbes Street Diner offering pies and gourmet sandwiches. We also have hot chips, a candy store and ice cream from Gelato Messina.

Look out for our three roving photographers kindly provided by Michaela Lawrence from Photoflyer. For just $2 you can have your photo taken in front of one of our photo backdrops and receive a Festival on Forbes framed memento.

One of the major fundraisers for the Festival is the Silent Auction, and the P&F has worked hard with the wider community to obtain brilliant prizes. Donations to the Silent Auction have an enormous impact on the Festival’s success and we value greatly the generosity of every donor who has contributed to the auction.

To view the catalogue and register online to big please click here.

Check out the Program here for all the fun activities, stalls and food available at the Festival.

We are looking forward to a fantastic day on Sunday – see you there!

NOT SO FUN FACT: Did you know 1 million plastic bottles are bought EVERY MINUTE around the world? That number is estimated to exceed half a trillion by 2021. The sad fact is that less than half of those bottles end up being recycled. Too many end up in landfill or the ocean, taking an estimated 450 years to breakdown. So please remember to bring your own water bottle to the 2019 Festival on Forbes!
