“If I were to choose one word that SCEGGS stands for it is Giving.

The objectives of the Diana Bowman Scholarship:
- Increase Diversity
- Promote Social Justice
- Encourage Excellence
On behalf of the Trust, I am pleased to invite our Old Girls to contribute to our Annual Giving Appeal, this year designed to mark Diana Bowman’s 80th birthday, which would have been in March 2017. She was indeed, a "Woman of Influence!"
I was recently in the Great Hall (the old St Peter’s Church), and looking at the beautiful windows named in her honour. We said at the time that there could have no more fitting tribute than these twin windows, rearing through the firm stone of the SCEGGS Great Hall, the blue glass filtering the steady light of an historic district.
Miss Bowman's guiding influence upon the School is embodied and perpetuated in the Ionic column, symbolising her classical training; the traditional colour symbols are a testament to her personal qualities of stability, wisdom and passion for fine accomplishments; and in the lamp lies the reminder of her own quest for further enlightenment and pursuit of life's possibility.
In our human striving to transcend the power of time, the window is a legacy not only of beauty but also of knowledge and one woman's vision. Diana had a real passion for scholarships and I think it would be wonderful to have a scholarship in her name. SCEGGS has always had a strong commitment to social justice, addressing disadvantage and broadening the outlook for all our girls.
It is our goal, with the help of the entire SCEGGS community, to ultimately raise $10 million for the Scholarship Fund, to cover a number of means-tested scholarships including the Diana Bowman Scholarship. This will eventually allow 10% of students to be assisted in some way by a means-tested scholarship.
Diana is such an important person in the life and history of the School, someone still so treasured by her Old Girls and respected by her peers. Everyone has just such fond memories of her!
The scholarship will be such a fitting tribute to Diana and will make the most amazing difference to the future of its recipients.
I do hope you will give what you can comfortably afford.
Head of School
“Diana was a warm and wise hearted individual and a friend to those who had the pleasure of knowing her. The learning environment she created was characterised by tolerance, respect for difference, endeavour and excellence and by the quiet promulgation of an ethos of social service as perhaps the key value which one might carry out into the world.”
In a letter to Jenny Allum, from a former student of Diana Bowman
